How to sync your clipboard between Macs without an account

Keep your text clips in step across your Macs through a shared folder, with no account and no server.

If you work across two Macs, copying something on one and reaching for it on the other is a small daily friction. Most ways to sync a clipboard between Macs ask you to create an account or pay for a subscription. Here is how to sync your clipboard between Macs without an account, using a folder your Macs already share.

The short answer

Apple’s built-in Universal Clipboard copies the last single item between nearby Apple devices, but it is one item at a time, not your history. To keep your clipboard history in step across Macs without an account, ClipLedge syncs your text clips through a shared folder (iCloud Drive by default), with no account and no server in between.

What the Mac does on its own

Universal Clipboard is part of Handoff: copy on one Apple device and paste on another nearby device signed into the same iCloud account. It is genuinely useful, but it only moves the most recent item, it needs the devices close together, and it does not sync your history or let you search past clips on the other Mac.

Sync your clipboard between Macs with no account

ClipLedge takes a different approach that needs no account and no server of its own:

  1. On each Mac, open Settings > Sync and switch on “Sync text clips between your Macs”.
  2. Point both Macs at the same shared folder. ClipLedge suggests an iCloud Drive/ClipLedge folder, or you can pick any folder both Macs sync, such as another cloud drive or a network share.
  3. That is it. Each Mac writes its own file of recent text clips and reads the others, merging them into one history.

Because each Mac only ever writes its own file, two Macs never fight over one file, and there is no central service to sign in to.

What syncs between Macs, and what stays put

Sync is deliberately scoped to the textual slice of your history:

  • Plain text, rich text and links sync, up to the 300 most recent such clips, each under 256 KB.
  • Images, files and app objects stay on the Mac they were copied on.

That keeps the shared folder small and fast, and keeps your heavy content local.

Why no account is the point

There is no ClipLedge account, no sign-in and no server holding your clips. The clips only ever sit in the folder you chose, which your Macs sync themselves. It is a one-time purchase, so there is no subscription for sync either. If you care about keeping your clipboard private, syncing your clipboard between Macs without an account is the cleaner path.
